File a complaint against unsolicited telemarketer callsTue, May 5th 2009
QUESTION: I am not on the do-not-call list, so I get a car warranty call every other day. I have not owned or leased a car for three years. So now when I get a call, I push 1 and get a live person. I keep them on the line as long as I can, by asking all kinds of questions, before I tell them that I do not own a car and ask them to get me off their list. It has not worked yet. What are the rules on do-not-call lists?
ANSWER: With your strategy, you'd think you'd be on everybody's list. But here's the official way to do things, according to Timothy Burns, public affairs director for the Better Business Bureau Serving Eastern Michigan.
He notes that Michigan has adopted the Federal Trade Commission's Do-Not-Call Registry as the state's Do-Not-Call List. If your number has been on the National Do-Not-Call Registry for at least 31 days and you continue to receive unwanted calls from telemarketers, file a complaint with the FTC at www.donotcall.gov or by calling toll-free 888-382-1222 for the national Do-Not-Call Registry. In order to file a complaint, you must be able to provide the dates you were called, your phone number registered with the Do-Not-Call Registry and either the name or telephone number of the company that called you. The FTC can issue warning citations and impose fines against companies violating do-not-call rules based upon complaints received. Recent Comments... |
